Spacetime. Abstract image of a zip on a background of stars, showing the concept of a tear in space- time; beyond the tear there is only darkness. The concept of spacetime is a result of Albert Einst- ein's theory of relativity. He showed that time combined with space to form a fourth dimension. He also showed that any object with mass distorts spacetime in its locality, a phenomenon we know as gravity. Black holes distort spacetime to such an extent that they collapse to a singularity, an infinitely small object which can be thought of as a tear in spacetime. It has since been proposed that the singularity is a gateway to another part of this Universe, or even an alternate Universe.
