Gamma ray burst, artwork. Gamma ray bursts are enormous pulses of energy that have been seen at the edge of the observable universe. It is not known what causes them. One theory is that they are caused by a hypernova, an extremely powerful variant of a supernova (explosive star death). Another theory is that they might be caused by the collision and coalescence of two neutron stars or black holes.
