Caption

The Supernova remnant MSH 11-54 as seen in infra- red (60 microns) by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) satellite. MSH 11-54 lies at a distance of 10,000 light years and is about 7 light years wide. A supernova is a spectacular energy outburst caused by the explosive disruption of a massive star at the end of its life. The emission seen here derives from interstellar medium which has been heated by the expanding shock waves of the supernova outburst. The colour code runs from red, through yellow and white for the brightest areas.
