Caption

False-colour UV image of the Crab Nebula. This was gathered by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, part of the Astro-1 payload of Shuttle Columbia, on 5 December 1990. Colours in the image represent UV intensity, from white and yellow (highest) to blue (lowest). The UV light seen here is emitted by electrons rushing out of the centre of the nebula at speeds close to that of light. The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion seen in 1054. The Crab Nebula appears in the constellation Taurus, and is about 6000 light years away from Earth.
