Radio 'photograph' of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (3C 461), at 6 cm wavelength, taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope, New Mexico. Cassiopeia A is the remnant of a catastrophic stellar explosion which occured around 1658 AD. It is probably the youngest supernova remnant in our Galaxy. The ring of radio emission represents a spherically expanding cloud of gas expelled by the explosion. This image shows an area about 6 arcmin square, at a resolution better than 0.35 arcsec. Observers; R. Tuffs, R. Perley, M. Brown & S. Gull. Dec 82, Feb 83 & Nov/Dec 83, A/B/C/D configurations, 27 antennae, continuum.
