Milky Way and the Earth. Artwork of the Milky Way (at lower centre) forming a backdrop for the Earth (at upper left). The Milky Way appears because most of the stars in our galaxy lie in a plane. Our galaxy has a flat spiral structure and contains an estimated 100 billion stars in total. The Sun and our Solar System (including Earth) lies within the Orion spiral arm at a distance of 33,000 light years from the centre.
