Milky Way galaxy. Diagram showing the structure of the Milky Way galaxy, of which the Sun is a part, from the side. The Sun is located in one of the spiral arms (blue), although the structure of the arms is not seen from the side. At the centre of the Milky Way is the nucleus (orange), a bulge of stars that is made up of older, redder stars than the arms. Around the galaxy is a halo that contains globular clusters, enormous balls of hundreds of thousands of stars that are as old as the galaxy itself. As shown, the Milky Way is thought to be around 80,000 light years in diameter.
