Optical CCD image of irregular galaxy NGC 4214. The galaxy can be resolved into individual stars with large telescopes under ideal conditions; this CCD image, however, reveals numerous tiny knots, which are clusters of stars sometimes associated with clouds of interstellar gas & dust. A supernova was discovered in NGC 4214 in 1954. The picture was made with a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera mounted on a telescope at the Whipple Observatory, Arizona. A CCD is a type of light-sensitive silicon chip, & is specially useful in studies of faint or distant objects.
