Barred spiral galaxy. Artist's impression of a barred spiral galaxy. Galaxies of this type (classified as Sb) have a central bulge of stars, a bar-like structure occupying the inner part of the disc, and spiral arms in the outer regions. The central core and the bar are dominated by old, yellow stars; the spiral arms are the site of star formation, with pink nebulae and hot young blue stars.
