Caption

Spiral galaxy NGC 300. True-colour optical image of the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the constellation Sculptor. This galaxy has a bright nucleus of older stars, and bluer, younger stars in its spiral arms. The diffuse white blobs visible in the arms are vast starbirth areas of hot, ionised gas. The galaxy is a member of our local group, and is around 3 million light years away. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light.
