Spiral galaxy NGC 253. Optical image of the spiral galaxy NGC 253, also known as the Silver Coin, or Sculptor, Galaxy. It lies around 8 million light years from Earth in the constellation of Sculptor. It is a starburst galaxy, one experiencing intense recent star formation. The galaxy is seen almost edge-on from Earth, but the spiral structure can still be clearly seen. A galaxy consists of many millions, more often billions, of stars orbiting a common centre of gravity. There are many hundreds of billions of galaxies throughout the universe.
