Interacting galaxies 3C 321. Radio image of the powerful radio jet (blue) produced by the 3C 321 system of interacting galaxies. The system's galaxies are not visible at radio wavelengths. This jet of high-energy particles is being generated by a supermassive black hole at the centre of a large galaxy. The jet is emerging from this large galaxy at lower left, and moving towards upper right, striking and being deflected by a smaller companion galaxy on the way. Earth, in the constellation Serpens Caput. This image was obtained with the Very Large Array and MERLIN radio telescopes. For a series of images of 3C 321, from a study carried out in 2007, including visible, radio, ultraviolet and X-ray observations, see images R826/124 to R826/130.
