Caption

Interacting galaxies 3C 321. Wide-field composite radio and X-ray image of the two galaxies (centre) in the 3C 321 system. This wide-field view shows the endpoints of the two radio jets emerging from the supermassive black hole in one of the galaxies. One of these jets is impacting the smaller companion galaxy, but the total extent of the jets is much wider, reaching out for a distance of 1.7 million light years. Image data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), and the Very Large Array and MERLIN radio telescopes. Earth, in the constellation Serpens Caput. For a series of images of 3C 321, from a study carried out in 2007, including visible, radio, ultraviolet and X-ray observations, see images R826/124 to R826/130.
