False-colour radio map of active galaxy Cygnus A (3C 405) at a wavelength of 6 cm taken by the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico. Cygnus A is a typical radio galaxy with twin jets emanating from its nucleus (small spot at centre) and joining it to two extended radio-emitting lobes. The jets are thought to be collimated beams of plasma which form radio hot spots where they collide with the surrounding medium. The colours represent intensity of 6 cm radio emission, from red for the most intense to blue for the least intense. This image shows a field of view 2x1 arcmin at a resolution of 0.4 arcsec.
