Caption

Demonstration of sublimation, the action of passing directly from solid to gas without an intermediate liquid phase. Crystals of iodine at the bottom of the beaker are heated using a bunsen burner. A purple vapour of gaseous iodine is evolved which rises before re-crystallizing on the cooler parts of the beaker, leaving a dark deposit.
