Caption

Starburst galaxy NGC 1313. Optical image of the starburst galaxy NGC 1313. North is at top. This spiral galaxy is in the constellation Reticulum. Starburst galaxies are those in which stars are born and die at a much greater rate than in normal galaxies. The bright knots of material in the outer arms of this galaxy (mainly below the white nucleus) are huge starbirth regions. The cause of this activity is unknown in the case of NGC 1313.
