Caption

Optical photograph of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small, irregular galaxy situated close to the south celestial pole & therefore visible only from the southern hemisphere (in this case Australia). It is a near neighbour of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. This galaxy contains the largest emission nebula known in the Universe, the Tarantula Nebula.
