The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51 or NGC 5194). Combined wavelength image of the classic spiral galaxy M51 & its small companion NGC 5195 (top). M51 is located at a distance of 20 million light years. The image combines an optical observation made in blue light with a CCD camera (colour coded green) with 2 radio observations, one of the 21cm continuum radio emission (coded red) & the other at the 21cm spectral line showing the distribution & kinmetacis of neutral hydrogen gas (coded blue). The radio observations were both made with the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico. The field of view is 17x17 arcminutes. More info available: see NRAO sheet.
