False-colour radio map of the quasar 2355+490, taken at a wavelength of 6cm with the Very Large Array radio telescope, New Mexico. The quasar has a tiny, bright core (red spot, centre) from which twin jets of matter stream in opposite directions, forming two extended radio-emitting lobes. Quasars are thought to be the highly energetic nuclei of extremely distant young galaxies. The radio jets are thought to be beams of plasma which are emerging from the top & bottom of a thick doughnut of material swirling around a supermassive black hole. The colours represent radio brightness, ranging from red (most intense) to blue (least intense). Observers: F.N. Owen, J.J. Puschell.
