Quasar. Hubble space telescope (HST) optical image of quasar PG 0052+251 at the centre of a spiral galaxy. The quasar is the bright object at centre, surrounded by the outer arms of the galaxy. Quasars are massive black holes at the centre of galaxies. The gravitational field of the black hole drags in matter, including interstellar gas and whole stars. This matter releases intense radiation as it falls towards the hole. Quasars are normally several hundred billion times brighter than normal stars. Quasar PG 0052+251 is about 1.4 billion light-years away.
