Caption

Radio image of the first candidate "Einstein ring", the radio source MG 1131+0456. Seen at a wavelength of 2cm by the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope, the object is a low-brightness ring with two bright components (yellow). Dr Jackie Hewitt, who discovered the object in 1987, has suggested it could be a distant quasar or radio galaxy which we see as a ring because its light has been "lensed" by the gravity of an intervening galaxy. Einstein proposed the effect of gravitational lensing in 1936. He predicted that lensing would usually produce two or more images of a single object, & that in a particular case the object would be seen as a ring. Observing run 20 Sep.
