Extragalactic medium. Artwork of the extragalactic medium, a tenuous network of hot gases that permeates the space between galaxies. The density of the gas varies, being denser around clusters of galaxies, and a near-perfect vacuum between clusters. Study of the distribution of the extragalactic medium can provide information on the formation and evolution of the universe.
