Construction of the European Space Agency's ELA-3 (Ensemble de Lancement Ariane Number 3) launch complex outside Kourou in French Guyana. The huge pit (foreground) is the flame deflector trench over which Ariane 5's huge solid rocket boosters will be tested. Twin railway tracks will link the teststand (BEAP - Banc d'Essai Etage a Poudre) with the white building at the jungle's edge (near distance), where the boosters are to be assembled. In the far distance is ESA's current ELA-2 launch complex, which prepares & fires Ariane 4 rockets.
