Black Arrow rocket. The British Black Arrow rocket being launched at Woomera, Australia. The Black Arrow programme was initiated in September 1964. Black Arrow was a small 3-stage rocket which was developed from the existing Black Knight design. Three Black Arrows were built. The first failed, but the second (seen here) successfully launched the Prospero satellite in October 1971. However, further Black Arrow construction was cancelled before this launch. Britain became the sixth nation to place a satellite in orbit. By 1997, this was still the only all-British mission to reach space. The third Black Arrow was never launched and is now in the Science Museum, London.
