A-3 rocket test. A-3 rocket being tested at test stand number 3, Kummersdorf, Germany. This stand, the largest at Kummersdorf, was mobile and could be moved along the rails seen here. This rocket was designed by the German military research team at Kummersdorf, led by Walter Dornberger and Wernher von Braun. Its first launch was in December 1937, but later launches were a failure. The A-3 was the third in the Aggregate series of rockets, developed from 1933 to 1945. This research program culminated in the A-4 rocket, more commonly known as the V-2, which was used in World War II.
