The Ariane 5 rocket will launch spacecraft, contained within the nose of the rocket, which can dock with the ISS. Ariane 5 will launch the Columbus Orbiting Facility, a scientific module for the ISS. It will also launch two European-designed spacecraft for re-supplying the space station: the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and Crew Transfer Vehicle (CTV). The ATV will carry supplies such as food, air & equipment on a regular basis. The CTV will deliver and retrieve astronauts as required. The ISS is due to be operational in June 2002.
