Ariane 5. Artwork of an Ariane 5 rocket deploying its payload during a mission to supply the International Space Station (ISS, not seen here). The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV, at top) has become exposed as the protective Ariane nose cone falls away. The ATV is an unmanned craft which will be used to carry logistical supplies such as food, air and equipment on a regular basis to the ISS. Both Ariane 5 and the ATV are European spacecraft, as is the Crew Transfer Vehicle (CTV) which the rocket can carry when new personnel are needed on the space station. The ISS is due to be operational in June 2002.
