Caption

Baker, the first primate to sucessfully travel into space, in her cage at the Alabama Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. On May 28, 1959, a Jupiter rocket carried Baker, a Peruvian squirrel monkey, and a rhesus monkey named Able on a 10,000 mile per hour sub-orbital journey. The flight lasted only about 15 minutes, but paved the way for men to venture into space. This photo was taken just before Baker's 21st birthday. She is thought to be the oldest living squirrel monkey in captivity.
