Caption

Chimpanzee "Ham" after his spaceflight. Ham was launched on Mercury-Redstone MR2 on 31 January 1961. Various malfunctions resulted in Ham sustaining 17g during launch and splashing down 212km off-target in the Atlantic Ocean. Ham was weightless for about 6 minutes. Despite these experiences, he lived to the ripe old age of 26, dying in January 1983 in a North Carolina zoo.
