Apollo 13 disaster. Artwork showing the explosion of an oxygen tank in the service module of Apollo 13. Apollo 13 was launched on 11 April 1970 on a mission to land on the Moon. The mission was aborted after only 56 hours due to the explosion with the crew around the Moon and four days from Earth. Using the undamaged landing module as a "lifeboat", the three astronauts returned safely to Earth without landing on the Moon.
