The astronauts are (left to right): Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans (at back) and Harrison Schmitt. Apollo 17 was launched on 7 December 1972, and was the last manned flight to the Moon. Cernan and Schmitt spent 75 hours on the surface, making three excursions on the Moon totalling 22 hours. Apollo 17 re-entered on 19 December 1972, splashing down in the southern Pacific Ocean. As Mission Commander, Cernan had the honour of being the last man to stand on the Lunar surface.
