Distant Earth. Photograph of the crescent Earth rising over the far side of the Moon. This photograph was taken in lunar orbit from the Apollo 17 Command Module. Apollo 17, launched on 7 December 1972, was the last manned flight to the Moon. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt stayed on the Moon for 75 hours, including three excursions on the surface totalling 22 hours. Ronald Evans remained in lunar orbit in the Command Module. Apollo 17 returned to Earth on 19 December 1972 - Cernan being the last man to stand on the Moon's surface.
