Astronaut James Irwin loads up his vehicle before setting out on an expedition with Astronaut David Scott. Their car is a brand-new 1971 model Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), featuring four-wheel drive and a radio communications antenna. This sporty, two-seat off-road vehicle can reach 11 kilometres per hour on the flat, powered by four 1/4 horsepower electric motors. A paragon of practicality, the LRV may be carried folded up in the side of the average Lunar Module (left). Irwin is seen here during the Apollo 15 mission on 31 July 1971.
