Caption

Lunar seismic testing. Astronaut Edgar Mitchell using seismic equipment on the surface of the Moon, during the Apollo 14 mission of 1971 (31 January to 9 February). The device, known as the thumper, detonated small explosive charges to create small localized moonquakes. These quakes were recorded so that a profile of the lunar interior could be made.
