Artist's impression of the launch of the Skylab space station by a Saturn V rocket. Skylab was 26m long and weighed 75 tonnes, the largest and heaviest payload ever put into orbit. It was launched on May 14, 1973 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and re-entered the Earth's atmosphere in 1979. Skylab was not continuously manned, but was occupied by three separate crews, each mission lasting for up to three months.
