Caption

Mir. View from the space shuttle Atlantis of the Russian space station Mir, to which the shuttle is docked. This image was taken during the joint shuttle/Mir missions STS-84 and Mir-23 (15th-24th May 1997). During these missions, astronaut Jerry M. Linenger was replaced as the guest researcher on Mir by the British-born astronaut C. Michael Foale. This was the sixth time a shuttle had docked with Mir. Foale stayed on board Mir until he was picked up by shuttle mission STS-86 (24th September-6th October 1997) and replaced on Mir by David Wolf. Mir is seen over the Andes mountains on Earth, with Lake Titicaca seen below a solar panel at far right.
