Astronaut comfort. The lavatory in the mock-up of the Freedom Space Station. Disposal of urine and faeces becomes quite a problem in weightlessness. Suction fans are used to ensure that solid and fluid waste are collected efficiently, either in the bowl (centre) or in the urinal (fixture on pipe). Foot restraints and hand-holds are also provided. The waste is collected in a disposable container where it is dried and compacted to minimise storage volume. Hands may be washed in the device at top. The compartment is fitted with a sliding door to ensure privacy. Freedom is scheduled for completion and permanent occupation by mid-1999.
