Flying insect explorer robot. Computer artwork of an insect robot (Entomopter) flying above the surface of Mars. This robot, which will crawl as well as fly, is being developed for Martian surveillance and data collection. A biomimetic design will closely resemble the wings of real insects. When on Mars, the robot will run on chemical or electrical fuel. It will launch from a mobile platform and return there for refuelling. The platform will be able to synthesize fuel using materials in the Martian environment. The robot is being developed in the USA by scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Ohio Aerospace Institute, and NASA.
