Flying robot and refuelling platform. Computer artwork of a flying insect robot (Entomopter) returning to its roving refuelling platform on the surface of Mars. The robot, which will crawl as well as fly, is being developed for Martian surveillance and data collection. It will launch from the platform, and return there to refuel. The platform will synthesize chemical or electrical fuel using materials in the Martian environment. The robot's biomimetic design will closely resemble the wings of real insects. The robot is being developed in the USA by scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Ohio Aerospace Institute, and NASA.
