Caption

Space dogs. Soviet researcher checking the space dogs Damka (meaning "little lady") and Kozyavka ("beauty", on right) in their space capsule. The dogs were to be sent into space aboard a Korabl Sputnik ("spaceship satellite") on 22 December 1960. However the booster's upper rocket stage failed, forcing the flight to be abandoned. The dogs were safely recovered after their unplanned sub-orbital flight. Photographed in 1959.
