Alexei A. Leonov (born 1934), Soviet cosmonaut, in a Soviet spacesuit. Leonov did the first ever EVA (extravehicular activity, or spacewalk) outside a spacecraft. This historic accomplishment was done during the Voskhod 2 mission, which launched on 18 March 1965 and orbited for just over a day. Leonov was the flight engineer. He became a celebrity in the Soviet Union and around the world. He would have commanded a cancelled Soviet mission to land on the Moon in 1966. His only other space flight was as commander of the historic Soyuz 19 mission that docked with a US Apollo spacecraft in July 1975. He retired from cosmonaut duty in 1982.
