Soyuz-TM 12 space crew. The crew of Soyuz-TM 12, from left to right, was: Sergei Krikalev, Anatloi Artsebarski and Helen Sharman. Soyuz-TM 12 was launched on 18 May 1991. Sharman was the first Briton to go into space. She was selected for the mission by Project Juno, a private British space programme, out of 13,000 applicants. After 18 months of intense space training, Sharman spent eight days on the Mir space station, returning to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-11 on 26 May 1991. Krikalev gained world fame as the cosmonaut 'stranded' in space for 10 months due to the break-up of the former Soviet Union.
