Lightweight satellite technology: Kitsat-A. This is one of the new low-cost lightweight satellites (lightsats, also called 'microsats') designed by the University of Surrey, UK. It main task is relaying electronic mail, primarily medical and technical data to developing countries, through its Packet Communications Transponder. This receives data from the sender, then stores it until over the relevant receiving station. It also carries radiation, Earth imaging and microchip experiments. With a mass of 45kg and a length of 60cm, Kitsat-A may be launched 'piggyback' with a large payload on an Ariane rocket, at a very low launch cost and early launch date.
