The European Remote-sensing Satellite (ERS-1) in orbit over the Earth. Launched by an Ariane 4 rocket on 17 July 1991, ERS-1 is equipped with all-weather microwave instruments that will be used primarily to study coastal, ocean and polar ice processes. ERS-1 will play a role in international investigations into climate change. The satellite is operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). The picture is a photographic collage using a real space photo of the Earth.
