Artist's impression of the Spot-1 satellite in orbit over the Galapagos Islands. Spot-1 is used to provide high-resolution (20m per pixel) images of the Earth from its 825km high orbit. The satellite was launched by an Ariane 1 vehicle on 22 February 1986. Its orbital characteristics mean that it overflies the same point on the Earth every 369 orbits (26 days). Images from this satellite are sold commercially.
