Caption

Envisat-1. Artwork showing the European Envisat-1 satellite in orbit. The long rectangular object on the underside of the satellite is a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) antenna. At far right is the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR), used to measure surface moisture, temperature and vegetation cover. At far left is the solar panel which provides electrical power. Due to be launched in late-1998, Envisat-1 will be the first of Europe's Polar-orbiting Earth Observation Mission (POEM) satellites.
