Artist's impression of the Defense Support Program 2000 (DSP 2000) satellite. The DSP satellites, first launched in 1970, carry sophisticated infrared detectors to identify the location and type of missiles launched by an enemy. The second generation DSPs also have nuclear detectors that can analyse nuclear explosions. DSP 2000 has been designed as a follow-on to the existing DSP Generation 3 network. DSP 2000 will have a 24,000- element IR detector array, capable of tracking ships, aircraft and cruise missiles.
