Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. The Soviet satellite was launched from Tyuratam on October 4, 1957, and transmitted signals back to earth for a period of 21 days. The photograph shows its various parts separated; in its final form it was a sphere 58 centimetres in diameter and weighing 83.5 kilos.
