End of the world. Abstract artwork depicting the end of the world. A skull is seen over the Earth, and a silhouette of death personified as the Grim Reaper is holding the fabric of space at right. There are many theories as to how the world will end, ranging from a meteorite collision to a worldwide nuclear war. It is inevitable, however, that Earth will be destroyed when the Sun begins to die and swell in around 5000 million years. Whether human life will survive up to or even beyond this point is impossible to predict. On an even greater timescale, the whole universe may die if its expansion is reversed, leading to the reverse of the Big Bang, the Big Crunch.
