Biosphere spaceships by Earth with the Moon in the background, computer artwork. These theoretical self-sufficient spaceships would grow their own food (under domed structures) and supply their own water and air. They would form a closed system and would recycle everything. Such spaceships will be needed for long missions and space colonies, as well as for future travel to the stars. Research on closed systems has been carried out in the Biosphere 2 Laboratory (B2L) in Arizona, USA. The Earth is Biosphere 1.
